So, hearing that there was going to be a protest in front of DEC in anticipation of the announcement, the PN's hiked on down there, signs in hand for a little old fashioned, drum thumpin' protestin'.
Who says BJ's not green!?
Upon my arrival, I found a handful of folks who had written (in chalk) on the sidewalk in front of the DEC that the citizens of Albany demand "clean air." Hmmm....seems everyone should be asking for that. (I thought as the fumes from Broadway buses filled my nostrils.) Several folks from DEC were confronting the environmental A-team and then I approached. If you've been following me on twitter, you know I've spent my afternoon with the State Legislature. Which means, I'm in my attorney costume. Soon, the little security fellow returned to the building.
Now, here's a nasty aside....ACO was unprepared for the protest (having run from the capital to the DEC) and, in a land where there were no stores, tried to enter the DEC building for a sip of water. I was told, get this, they didn't have water in the building. Hmmm...is this a state building? Seems they should have running water. I'll go to bat for ya guys...I'll make it my personal quest to get you running water at your Broadway office, hang in there, ACO is coming to the rescue.
There were about 20 protesters, not bad for a 24 hour protest organization, the TU, the Metroland, several television stations, Dan Curtis (who has become a one man media show) and ACT.

We Pine Nuts resorted to showing up at the DEC after being ignored through hearing after hearing with hundreds of people opposing the landfill, hundreds of pages of testimony and comment filed, thousands of pages of Environmental Impact Statements with lousy science in them read and critiqued; Lawsuits were filed on 3 previous expansions.
Yes, it's time to get out there and publicly demand that a treasure of biodiversity, one of the 20 inland pine barrens remaining in the world, a habitat with a federally endangered butterfly whose populations are dangerously low and which saw two species extirpated recently, be protected, cherished and advocated for.
Save the Pine Bush is an organization which is dedicated to using all formal channels of environmental advocacy, legal channels of environmental protection as well as educational efforts, such as this one, to reach out to the hearts of Albany citizens who do care about our rare and precious Pine Bush.

Jerry, we'll all thing of you when we and our kids are dying of cancer. A great legacy you've left. But, hey, we'll have a drink in on of your bars on the way to the great beyond.
Must be the Pine Nuts were prepared for trouble: I heard they took two lawyers with them down to DEC Headquarters. And DEC Management wouldn't even come out and talk with the PN's. Chickens!
It's not as though Management didn't know the PN's were there. DEC employees said they could hear the chanting of the PN's all through the building.
I'll bet the Commissioner is going to be pretty embarassed when this thing is all over with. Larceny, fraud, violations of DEC's own rules, injuring people's health.
The bright side of things was that some DEC employees came out and told the PN's they were doing the right thing. As one DEC employee said, "Go get 'em!" So, I guess they will.

A half a million years from now we'll get a big surprise
When from Big Jerry's landfill we'll draw energy supplies.
But I predict those times to come will see the same disputants
Fighting still though they will all by then have turned to mutants.
The city of Albany currently recycles only #1 and #2 coded plastics. How come we don't recycle #3-#7 coded platics? All amounts equal we're only recycling 30% of the plastic we should be recycling?!!!! WTF?
To anonymous: The City doesn't even recycle many/most #1 & #2 containers. Why? Residents know the City does not enforce against non-recyclers so the only ones who are recycling are those who feel compelled to. Don't believe me? Take a walk on trash night and see for yourself. This could be part of (maybe a major) reason why the landfill is filling way faster than predicted.
you're absolutely right about that. Carolyn McLaughlin voted to approve more building in the Pine Bush. Can we get the Pine Nuts to work for Lenny's win on the Working Family's line in November?
