Lights in the Park....Fundraiser?

I worked all day...which means that I had the radio on "Channel 9" all day, which means I got to hear the voice of Lenny Ricchuiti all day long telling us how wonderful the "Lights in the Park" was for the youth of the city....over and over and over. Don't ask me why I didn't get up and change it, you know, sometimes it just didn't get my attention until that voice came on there...that voice which makes me think of sexual harrassment.

So, around noon I decided to take a break and stroll on over to the park to say howdy to Lenny. Not much going on there, some lights were up, there were trailers placed throughout the park which, I'm assuming, held the display...boxes were under the trailers and a woman sat by one of the pickup trucks shuffling through the yellow leaves looking for, I assume, walnuts. (Are there other types of nuts here? I'm used to paper shell pecans...say that the right way, even in your head...pakahns.)

I remembered back to the pre-primary (pre my meeting with Lenny's accuser) and thought about my discussion with Mr. Ricchuiti in reference to the amount of money brought in by the event. He told me he just outsources it now, as a matter of fact...it's not even worth the trouble anymore. Hindsight, I assume it wasn't worth the trouble since he planned on changing jobs at that point in his life. Didn't happen...and now we have another year with Lights in the Park.

So, I pulled his brand spankin' new 990 which, oddly, states that the mission of the organization is to provide lights in the park. I think it's an error but it's rather distracting to someone who reads 990s rather often. So, seems that Mr. Richuitti paid Midwest Display $129,850 for, well, the display. I also see that the City of Albany provided $20,000 inkind support (though I'm assuming that's for the use of the park for 7 weeks...including the Playhouse which I had to pay $250 to use for a couple of hours.) Oh yeah, and I was required to pay the police officers for my event...oh, and I had to bring my own generators...couldn't use the City's power....wonder if Ole Len got comped on all that too?

Now, remember, I'm just assuming that $20K from the City was for this event which leaves me wondering if that covers PAL's use of the park for the summer movie series also. Nice deal if ya can get it. Oh yeah, and the lights are erected by volunteers, none of which were very visible when I hit the park and it's sponsored by Hannaford...I know this because the name Hannaford is all over the display.

Now, my problem with this is that I would never support any organization with which Mr. Ricchuitti was associated and I'm part of the city. Oh, AND, even with the City's support, PAL is charging people for entry! At least when the park is tied up by the city we all have free entry to spend our money. So, we are providing free space for PAL to outsource its fundraising. Ya see, a "for profit" organization is getting use of our park to make some money and the "leftover" goes to PAL. Now, lots of nonprofits consider this okay...I don't. It kind of reminds me of the telemarketing companies that call around for charitable donations and give the "left over" to the charity they are representing. Actually, based on the other NY PALs they would be clearing a larger percentage of the take had they gone with the telemarketers. That is, of course, if they have a clean database which I'm betting they don't.

Oh, yeah, and each time I hear that all the money from Lights in the Park will be going to PAL, I cringe...ya see, when you look at the revenue and the expenses, 68% of the revenue goes to "for profit" companies. That's not including the city's kicking in $20K for 50 days (or so) use of a majority of our park, police for safety for those same 50 days...oh, and you can bet there's some benes that go along with volunteering for PAL.

And while I'm on a Lenny rant....who the hell is that Christmas Tree sale over in Lincoln Park benefitting?(Wonder how much we the people donate for that brightly lit real estate. Yeah, I got a call on it...rumor has it that the money spent on Christmas trees isn't making into any of Lenny's nonprofit organizations. Now, you can imagine what the speculation has been so I pulled the Little League's 990 (Informational form) as well as PALs. I'm not seeing anything there either. So, where is this money going? I used to do tree sales for a small nonprofit and the profits were always recorded. What gives? Now, I'm not accusin' anyone, I'm just sayin'....if you're selling trees to help the little league, show how much revenue is generatin' in your annual report. And, I understand I could be completely off...so, Mr. Ricchuiti, if you are raising money for some other organization, let me know...I don't have any issues pulling any 990s to clear this up.

Here's a tip, Len, my man...don't give inerviews that will run long enough to make me put on my research hat to find out what's really going on with your fundraising antics....and don't tell ACO that you are cancelling the event because you don't have time and because it didn't benefit the organiztion enough to  consume your time only to run it anyway. Oh hell, maybe I'm just in a mood...check that...no, this is wrong.

He has not been proven guilty of sexual harassment.

Yes, Sean, I'm well aware...and at no time have I said he "has been proven guilty." Sexual harrassment is what I think of when I think of Lenny (as I stated) the why of that is because I've been in the same room with him and experienced his behavior in addition to speaking in depth with one woman who was harrassed for years and several who spoke to me regarding his behavior.

Let's think of it this way. There is a person who has privately threatened you with bodily harm...now, they have been fine with everyone else (perhaps even "over the top" nice) but you KNOW their true nature. Would you feel a little obligation to let others know the true nature of this beast?

Or, perhaps, as is the practice of "abusers" you would like to keep the victims seperate and quieted.

I'm not Lenny's judge and jury...I'm a person who has spoken to several "targets" and confidants of his targets...I've been in the same room with Lenny and have considered the consistency of the statements.

With that in mind, I have NEVER claimed that Lenny has been "proven guilty" it is simply my opinion considering all the information that has been provided me.

And, if you haven't figured this out after the many reminders I leave here, this blog is my opinion supported by my facts.

So ACO -

Are you saying it shouldn't be in-kind support? I kinda like the lights in the Park . . .but I understand what you're getting at here. I'd prefer that the city share in the profits . . .on the other hand, I'm not sure that having the display isn't a social benefit/profit.

On the other hand . . .I heard we're up to $15 this year . . .say what?

albanycitizenone said...

Actually, the cost starts at $15 (for a car) and goes to $75 (for a bus).

I don't have an issue with the "in kind" I have an issue with the valuation of the inkind and it showing properly on the 990s (both the little league and PAL). If the city is giving away electricity, manpower, and park space (yes, DGS trucks were onsight yesterday) consistently to the same organization, we've got to question the reason for it.

If this is "outsourced" then why don't we let another nonprofit do this annual event...or why don't we outsource the event and split the profits between several organizations...perhaps, since PAL has very little to do with the even other than speaking to the press about it, we could use it as a collective fund for those NPOs worthy of fund distribution.

Isn't anyone getting the point? There seems to be some abuse of the relationship between the Little League/PAL and the city. Where is that Christmas tree money going?

I just love your answers to the questions propose by Sean and Publican 6.

I want to say you are right on the money when you say lets outsource the event and split the MONEY! God only knows this city is broke.

What will this city experience in new taxes next year? and will the citizens of Albany be able to pay them? If there are any citizens left as you know they are leaving Jerry "City" in groves!! As one family leaves one comes in but not in the same financial level of the one leaving.

Another good question about the Christmas tree sale: What organization is going to pay to clean up the mess? Last year, the Christmas elves dug 6 inch ruts in the long and broke half the sidewalk.

PAL is rumored to be taking over St. Teresa's former parish center. I'm sure the neighborhood is going to love that.

I'm with ya Vincent!
I think a lot of the issues in our area are left behind us every four years. This can't continue to happen. I, for one, am in what is considered around here campaign mode every single day. (I think I just heard BJ groan.)
If all our work amounts to merely a nudge in the right direction...it's a nudge that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Thanks for reading...remind me to fill ya in on your favorite vacant building.

What confounds me, ACO, is that you are correctly and constantly finding things wrong with how this city is run and about those around and under and near "BJ".

Yet, with all that said, you recently endorsed him, and appear to give BJ a pass at every turn when it comes to nailing this administration's policies/accountability (or lack thereof).

When are you going to stop addressing the symptom, stop whining and go after the root cause? You are sounding more and more like that TU Mayoral endorsement.

albanycitizenone said...

anon last...what confounds me is how you claim that I endorsed BJ. I guess that's because I didn't "endorse" your candidate?

As for the TU endorsement, I believe they probably didn't endorse the other Democrat in the race because he was just so darn bad. And, I don't say that from the perspective of an observer, I say that with first hand, in depth knowledge of the candidate.

While the gopper was, I believe, the best qualified, the odds of him winning and getting a cooperative administration were astronomical. Unfortunately, I know the gopper and I know he could have done it cooperative admin or not...that is the situation in Albany that must change....it's not one man...it's the environment.

For the record, I never endorsed any candidate and the only ones I did any actual work for Luke Gucker and Dominick Calsolaro although I was a supporter of several.

Now, see, it just makes you look silly when you try to read what I don't say rather than reading what I do say.

Lenny will be at Wednesday's Washington Park Neighborhood Association meeting.

albanycitizenone said...

Yes, I noticed Lenny would be at the Washington Park meeting but it isn't worth putting up with the old grouch that runs that meeting to attend. :)

Another good column ACO, well done.

wordplay aco; the absence of condemnation = endorsement.

albanycitizenone said...

the absence of condemnation=endorsement? How f*ckin stupid are you?
Look to bush for support of that argument.

Bit riled up are we, ACO?

We could do without the profanity.

Demonstrate your serious BJ-critical investigative/journalistic credentials.

Stop hiding behind curse words and other candidates' blemishes.

We need you to get the facts, ask the questions and put out the information. The TU isn't going to.

Do your job ACO. We're depending on you.

To: anon 11/10 @ 5:09 a.m. I really like when she gets riled up by the likes of challengers or those with opposing opinions. You need to be on your A game or she'll call you on it in a heartbeat!

To: Sean, 11/8 @ 11:43 even the older PAL kids know about him - they see and they talk (and they tell others). This shouldn't even be a topic of conversation - it's like the claim of entrapment -> ya really shouldn't have been doing it PERIOD!

I was just talking to someone about the lights. They were passing by the park, saw them they called me and we had a conversation similar to this article (not as in depth of course). I told them I'm going to check ACO because I just know she has written on the subject.

Thanks ACO for the more information. I am going to hold my council member accountable on this.

Thanks Lisa R. I was having a bad evening and the comment hit me wrong. I shouldn't have cussed, sorry...that said...f*ck 'em all.

I understand that this light issue and use of the park may be brought up in caucus which is, I believe, scheduled for Thursday as Wednesday's a holiday. I'll stand corrected if anyone out there (Mr. Marsolais) knows when the next caucus is scheduled.

Stay on your council people!
